Oceansat-2, the second in the series of Oceansat Series, is envisaged to provide continuity of operational services of Oceansat-1(IRS-P4) with enhanced application potential. It carried three payloads: Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM-2); Ku-band Pencil Beam scatterometer (OSCAT), and Radio Occultation Sounder for Atmosphere (ROSA) developed by the Italian Space Agency.

The major objectives of Oceansat-2:

  • Design, develop, launch and operate a state of art 3-axis body stabilized satellite providing ocean based remote sensing services to the user communities.
  • Establish ground segment to receive and process the payload data.
  • Develop related algorithms and data products.
  • Serve in well established application areas and also to ensure the mission utility.
  • Enhanced applications with the availability of new scatterometer.

OCM: 360 x 252 m, 1420 km swath, 12 bit radiometry, 402 – 885 nm in 8 Bands (B1: 402 – 422 nm; B2: 433 – 453 nm; B3: 480 – 500 nm; B4: 500 – 520 nm, B5: 545 – 565 nm; B6: 610 – 630 nm; B7: 725 – 755 nm; B8: 845 – 885 nm)

SCAT: 1400 km swath; Single frequency in dual polarized mode (HH & VV): 13.515625 GHz

ROSA: Processes the received GPS signal in both the L1 (1560 – 1590 MHz) and L2 (1212 – 1242 MHz) frequency bands, 16 dual-frequency channels in the ROSA receiver

Attitude and Orbit Control 3-axis body stabilized based on inputs from Earth sensor, 2 Magnetometers with 4 Reaction Wheels, 2 Magnetic Torquers and Thrusters
Power Solar Arrays generating 1360 W backed by 2 Ni-Cd batteries of 24 AH capacities each
