IMS-1, previously referred to as TWSat (Third World Satellite), is the first low-cost microsatellite imaging mission of ISRO for remote sensing application. Unlike the earlier satellites, the redundancy philosophy is not built into IMS-1 bus. The IMS-1 carried two payloads namely multispectral camera and hyperspectral camera for natural resources applications like agriculture, geology, forest coverage and deforestation, urban infrastructure development etc. The major challenge in the design and development of camera had been to minimize size, weight and power and realization in shortest time.

       The major objectives of IMS-1:

  • Build, launch and operate a 3-axis stabilized remote sensing micro-satellite for launch onboard PSLV, as a auxiliary satellite, providing easy access of remote sensing data to the educational institutions, research organizations and government agencies in the developing countries. The spacecraft bus is developed as a versatile micro-satellite bus in order to carry in future, a number of different payloads without significant changes in the bus.

  • Design and develop Hyper-spectral imager for evaluation and validation.

Hyper-Spectral (HySI) Camera: 505.6 m resolution, 129.5 km swath, 16 bit radiometry, 64 bands in the range of 400 – 950 nm with spectral separation of 8 nm and bandwidth of lessthan 15 nm.
