The Satellite with ARGOS and ALTIKA (SARAL) is a joint Indo-French satellite mission for oceanographic studies. It is a mini satellite designed using IMS-2 Bus. It carried two payloads of CNES, France namely ALTIKA and ARGOS. ALTIKA consists of an altimeter for ocean topography and ARGOS is a data collection platform to collect weather information from ocean buoys for ocean currents, fish migration, weather predictions, etc. The satellite also carried Solid State C-band Transponder (SCBT) of ISRO for ground RADAR calibration. It is a continuation of such support provided by C-Band Transponders flown in the earlier IRS-P3 and IRS-P5 missions.

Instruments onboard ALTIKA includes Ka Band Altimeter, Dual Frequency Radiometer, LRA (Laser Retro-Reflector Array) and DORIS (Doppler Orbitography and Radio Positioning integrated by satellite):

Altimeter: 35.75 GHz, 8 km swath

Radiometer: 27 GHz (Ka-band) and 23.8 GHz (K-band)

ARGOS: Data Collection Platform

SCBT: C-Band Transponder for calibration of Ground Radars at SDSC, SHAR.

Attitude and Orbit Control 3-axis stabilized based on inputs from 4 PI sun sensors, magnetometer, star sensors and miniaturized gyro based Inertial Reference Unit
