भारतीय अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान संगठन ने अपने विक्रम साराभाई अंतरिक्ष केंद्र (वीएसएससी) में सोल-जेल प्रक्रिया द्वारा सिलिका फाइबर विकसित करने के लिए एक नई तकनीक विकसित की है। फाइबर का उपयोग 1500oC तक के उच्च तापमान इन्सुलेशन के लिए किया जा सकता है।
सिलिका फाइबर विकसित करने के लिए अपनाई गई निम्न तापमान प्रक्रिया (400oC) पारंपरिक तकनीकों की तुलना में अधिक किफायती है और उच्च शुद्धता वाले महीन फाइबर दे सकती है। इसके अलावा, फाइबर भी खोखले होते हैं, जिससे इन्सुलेशन संपत्ति में और सुधार होता है।
