Dr. Rajeev UP, Distinguished Scientist assumed charge as Director, VSSC on 1st July 2026.

He holds a BTech in Applied Electronics and Instrumentation from the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram Kerala; an MTech from the Regional Engineering College Calicut, Kerala; and a PhD in Aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore.

He joined Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in 1994. He has designed guidance algorithms for multiple & varied missions viz. GSLV, PSLV GTO missions, Space capsule recovery experiment Mission, RLV-HEX & LEX missions and Gaganyaan mission. As Group Director, Control and Guidance Design Group he contributed significantly to the Digital autopilot design of ISRO’s space transportation systems. He made significant contributions to the design of Chandrayaan 3 guidance algorithm.

As Group Director, Mission Synthesis and Simulation Group, he contributed to the simulation and validation of NGC systems of all missions.

Later, he became Programme Director, Advanced Technology & Systems Programme, and thereafter of the Space Transportation System. As Programme Director, STS he contributed to the operational missions of PSLV and GSLV. He served as Associate Director (R&D), VSSC, with additional charge of Deputy Director, Control, Guidance and Simulation Entity (CGSE), VSSC.

His areas of interest are optimal control, nonlinear control, intelligent control & guidance and control of space transportation systems.
