The Gaganyaan programme envisages undertaking the demonstration of human spaceflight with a crew of three astronauts to 400 km LEO. The Human rated GSLV MKIII is identified as the launch vehicle for Gaganyaan mission. Gaganyaan programme gives paramount importance to crew safety and all efforts will be put in to ensure safe and comfortable travel of crew to space and back to earth. This programme will be implemented by synergising the expertise available within ISRO Centres, National institutions / agencies, academia and industries.
The Gaganyaan Programme envisages laying the foundation for a sustained Indian human space exploration programme in the long run. The programme thereby fulfills the aspirations of an established space-faring nation.

  • The vision is to develop the capability of transporting humans to space and bring back and to achieve autonomy in access to space with tangible and intangible benefits to national development with maximal industry/academia participation and international cooperation
  • Accelerating the scientific & technological development in the country to foster intellectual capacity and innovation
  • Establishing the global inter-operability in the efforts to establish and sustain human presence in space
  • Providing feasible platforms to undertake scientific experiments to advance the knowledge of the solar system and beyond
  • Enabling more effective and equitable participation in emerging international endeavors for harnessing of resources elsewhere and harnessing the technologies developed for potential societal benefits
